What Colors to Paint Your House to Sell

Thinking of painting your exterior soon? If that’s the case and you want to eventually sell your home to someone else, you can strategically choose colors that are more likely to sell.

Yes that is a thing. Turns out certain colors sell faster. While the color story is slightly different in different parts of the country, the greater Atlanta trends are unanimous.

Before we get into naming the actual colors, there are some general rules you should follow.

1. Exercise Restraint.
Do not use more than three colors. No matter how large your home, more than three colors is just a bad idea. It can look busy and make your home actually look smaller. Not the desired effect when you are trying to attract buyers.

2. Don’t Experiment With the Unexpected.
This is not the time to try painting your front façade fuchsia or any shade of pink, yellow or orange. Save those choices for a fun canvas you paint inside.

3. Neutrals are Your Friends.
Plan on one main base color – think white or a soft neutral and then add color to architectural details like the front door, trim and shutters.

4. Using Neutrals to Create a Classic Color Scheme.
Electing to go with a traditional classic color scheme when you are planning on selling is a great idea. Plan for a base of a crisp white (which is very often not what you think of as white at all) for your main color then add colors like Valspar’s Swiss Coffee, Dark Kettle Black on details, and Heirloom Red on the front door.

Here’s a list of top rated exterior colors recommended by the companies themselves. These are all great choices and you can’t
really go wrong here.

Painting the exterior of your home can be a big decision so feel free to get a second opinion from Karen. It’s also a great idea to buy the color you think you want in a sample size and rolling it in a large paint square. You can lean it up against the house,
move it around and see if you truly love it. Make sure you look at it several times throughout the day, as the light changes and therefore will impact the color.

As always, contact Karen for all your real estate questions. She’s here to help you in a wide variety of ways! Happy painting, and now let’s sell that house!
