We all do it. Drop it in the garage with the intention of getting rid of it later or thinking we will put it away in its proper place later.
It’s so easy to drop it in the garage. The only time we have to really see it is when we are coming or going, and we can quickly close the door and go into our well-organized space. So garages have a way of getting filled with all sorts of things. Things that just do not belong there and could create safety hazards.
You may have already decided to “let it go” and have purged it from your home…you just haven’t gotten around to dropping it off to your favorite charitable organization or hazardous waste facility.
Donna Smallin Kuper, an organizing and cleaning expert recommends taking stock of belongings and donating what isn’t needed. “Most of the stuff people store in the garage is stuff they decided they no longer want in their everyday living space,” she says. “So they get it out of their house — out of sight, out of mind — and there it sits.”
Here Comes the Heat of the Atlanta Summer
Your garage can reach incredibly high temperatures in the Atlanta Summer, so if you are like most of us, it could be a great time to declutter, and store potentially dangerous things properly that have found their way to the garage.
A lot of things can be damaged from extreme temperatures, moisture and humidity, so make sure that you remove those things immediately. Other things like paint and propane that contain chemicals are also safety hazards when paired with soaring temperatures.
