January GARDENING in Atlanta

January GARDENING in Atlanta

While January Gardening may sound like an oxymoron, it’s not! The North Atlanta Winter isn’t really like the winters in the north and west, so there’s plenty you can do now that will have your landscaping in great shape come spring and summer. A great idea regardless, but especially great if you are considering listing your property in spring! Plus it’s good to get outside and enjoy the cooler temperatures simply because most days… you can!

According to Garden Design.com , here are just a few of the Gardening Tasks you can accomplish in January. So roll up your sleeves, and get to it!

Test & Amend Soil

Testing your soil may seem a bit over the top, but it’s not. It all begins with great soil and plants will not thrive without the proper nutrients. You can buy a kit online, or hire a pro. Once you know what your soil is lacking, it’s easy to “build up” your soil with the proper amendments.

Harvest then Decorate

You’ll be surprised at all the foliage, stems, seed heads, berries, and cones that you can harvest and bring indoors to create winter arrangements. Choose a variety of shades. Colors and textures. Check out this blog post by Deborah Silver that showcases how to make beautiful winter arrangements.

Build Something

Containers, obelisks, statuary, sculptures, arbors, trellises, or other garden ornaments are all wonderful additions to your garden and lawn. They can be stunning visual points of interests and bold architectural. Consider building a pathway.

Prune Trees & Shrubs

It’s best to trim and prune while trees and shrubs are dormant. Limbs are exposed allowing good visibility to judge overall shape. Remove broken, crossed and diseased branches.
RESOURCE: The Arbor Day Foundation has a great video to help you learn more about pruning trees.

Order Your Summer Bulbs, Corms & Tubers

Although you should not plant till soil reaches 60 degrees, you can order now for best selection of many favorites.

 Take a Field Trip

A Conservatory like Atlanta Botanical Garden is the perfect place to spend a winter day, and inspire endless inspiration.
