Is Atlanta Still a BEST Place to Live?

Money’s Best Places to Live list has been around for some time, and Atlanta has frequently made the  magazine’s cut. For 2022/2023, the magazine has dubbed Atlanta THE BEST, so yes, Atlanta is still a great place to live.

The goal of the magazine this year was to name a place where anyone can feel like they belong. Along with outstanding racial, economic, and cultural diversity, Money’s ranking in each city’s labor market, overall home affordability, and entertainment scenes.

According to Money, Atlanta’s burgeoning tech scene has likely played a big role in contributing to the city’s growth in recent years. Population-wise, Atlanta hovers right around 500,000… but both culturally and economically, the Georgia capital punches way above its weight.

Atlanta boasts some of the best universities in the country, including Georgia Tech — which ranked 6th on Money’s 2022 list of Best Colleges — and UGA which just sealed its second consecutive national championship in football. Its culinary scene is outstanding, and it has America’s largest puppetry museum, America’s only trap music museum, as well as professional baseball, football, basketball, and soccer.

No matter what kind of person you are, Atlanta is a place where you can feel at home. And, perhaps more importantly, it’s a place with plentiful job opportunities. While it remains a job seeker’s market across the U.S., Atlanta’s job market is exceptionally strong with an unemployment rate far lower than the national average. Atlanta’s job growth has continued to outpace the rest of the country’s for the past twelve months.

Tech jobs are driving much of the growth. Atlanta also has a flourishing startup ecosystem, fueled by a growing number of tech incubators and venture capital firms stationed here. Tech behemoths like Apple, Microsoft and Alphabet (Google’s parent company) have all recently opened up shop here, as have new startups like the inclusivity-centric marketing platform We Are Rosie and the meeting scheduling app Calendly.

“Over the last decade, we’ve seen a lot of growth in terms of being able to scale a company here,” says Aaron Hurst, founding director of Endeavor Atlanta, a startup accelerator that caters to entrepreneurs in underserved markets. “Now, people are starting to view Atlanta as a good place to launch their careers.”
