The Gallery Wall
Gallery Walls are gorgeous! They are such a wonderful way to create interest while making a personal statement. They can serve as your own personal art project that speaks to you, and about you. They can be specific or not. You can change it up often, and have more than one. Gallery Walls are popping up in common spaces like living rooms, hallways and bedrooms.
Where to Begin
The first rule of Gallery Walls is there are no rules. But here are some guidelines to serve as a jumping off point.
Subject Matter
This can be related items or not. You can make the entire wall portraits for example, but to keep it from getting boring, don’t do many similar portraits. Instead focus on variety – like close ups contrasted with full body.
Color. Size. Scale.
All these elements are important and sometimes the best way to start is just to begin with one piece you know you love. Graphic text, vintage, watercolor, oil, photography are all wonderful additions. You can work with within a theme but you may want to change up the frames or colors of the mats just to give some diversity and contrast.
Texture
Don’t forget about texture. A sculptural piece can bring dimension and interest to the wall. Texture can also be represented with frames with different finishes or objects.
Where to Put Your Gallery Wall
Where you put your wall, will depend on where you have the space. Gallery Walls are equally at home in a variety of places. Common spaces like living rooms, hallways and in bedrooms. If your formal living room is more elegant, create an elegant wall. If it’s a playroom or a downstairs rec room, then be more playful.
Use your Imagination
Be creative, be bold… but don’t worry you can also plan a little on the floor before you commit. Measure out roughly how much space you have. Then tape off the floor with painter’s tape and play around with the layout on the floor. The relationships between the objects are important. Look for balance in visual weight.
Don’t Stop With the Wall
Tie other decorative items to the wall. A chair, window treatments, pillows or rug can be lovely compliments.
