This month’s Community Spotlight is Lake Oconee. Staggeringly beautiful and remarkably exciting, Karen LOVES Lake Oconee so much she and her husband recently broke ground on their own little piece of Lake Oconee paradise!

Lake Oconee was created by damming of the Oconee River that flows through east-central Georgia. Sitting between Atlanta and Augusta, Lake Oconee is surrounded by three counties – Putnam, Greene and Morgan. It also serves as a backdrop to some magnificent residential communities like Harbor Club, Cuscowilla and Reynolds Plantation.

This massive 19,000 acre lake with a staggering 374 miles of shoreline makes it a fishing, boating and water sports enthusiast’s dream. Surrounded with beautiful green trees, the communities have hiking and biking trails, sidewalks and streetlights, and shopping and restaurants.

Fishing

Lake Oconee is the second-largest lake in the state, with four Full Service Marinas and 19,000 acres of fresh water making it a fishing paradise. Largemouth Bass, Crappie, and Catfish are among the most popular species.

Golf

Lake Oconee has six championship Golf Courses designed by legendary golf course designers like Bob Cupp, Jack Nicklaus, and Tom Fazio, making it a veritable golfer’s fantasy! Two of these course are in the Top 100 in the country, and four of are in the Top 10 of Georgia. At Lake Oconee, golf is virtually a year round activity along with a wide variety of member activities and scheduled special events. Education

A $17.5 million charter school is under construction on a site between Lake Oconee and Greensboro, and there is a $2.5 million renovation project to create a new performing arts center. In addition, Lake Oconee is just south of Athens, home to the University of Georgia.
