The State of Flooring: Color & Texture

Never have there been more choices in flooring. New technological advances have exploded flooring choices. So where do you begin? The good news is that some of these trends are going to remain very much ‘in’ for the next few years. In fact, one of the options detailed below has been on trend according to Flooring Inc.com for the last decade.

The Looks

Imperfections, Textures and Character

Bringing the outdoors in and with a nod to nature, we are seeing lots of more natural and less manufactured looks.

Mix it Up to Create a More Natural Look

High variety wood with sharp contrast in colors feels much more organic and more like natural wood.

Wire Brushed, Hand Scraped or Distressed

Texture is currently king. Texture instantly created visual interest and it can be ever so slight, or downright rustic.

Go Green

Eco Friendly Bamboo, Cork and Engineered Wood are all on trend and have really developed as a category, and offer incredible and a wide variety of choices in look and feel.

Luxury Vinyl

In the beginning of the vinyl movement, there was only vinyl and now there’s Luxury Vinyl -which offers all the name implies. Vinyl has probably had the most impact on flooring design than any other thing the last few years.

Luxury Vinyl can look like hardwood, stone, and concrete. It’s pretty much indestructible and WPC (waterproof vinyl) is driving a lot of this growth. Basements that suffer a flood can and do recover thanks to Waterproof Vinyl.

COLOR STORIES

The Age of Gray

We’ve seen it completely dominate wall color and the same can be said of flooring. Flooring is now available in literally dozens of shades of gray.

Blondes Are Back

While gray still rules, you can expect to see Blondes making a comeback. Creating visual expansiveness, blondes are brighter and welcome a lighter, warmer alternative to all the gray.

Whitewash is Here

Not just for beach cottages anymore, whitewash is everywhere. Hardwoods are getting the treatment and laminate and vinyl have offerings in this color look as well.

Espresso Darks

This classic dark color has been hot for over ten years, and is still a go to look. It can provide an amazing backdrop, particularly for some white and bright interiors. The contrast espresso darks offer a white interior palette can be stunning.
